Architecture is largely skills and experience based so it is crucial that academia reflects this. If it were to take a similar approach to other industries for example, where a bachelor's is sufficient as an entry point to the industry and moving forward, students work and study alongside. I feel this really strengthens the application of skills and knowledge. The apprenticeship scheme is a good start but it is currently so exclusive

12. To enable institutions to innovate and to promote diversity, we think that the structure needs to change from the current approach of Parts 1, 2 and 3. What are your views on this?

I think the apprenticeship style is better than the current norms to registration. However, it is incredibly exclusive and only for UK citizens which is very limiting. In fact, I personally was not allowed to apply because, although I'm a UK citizen and undertook my bachelor's here, I worked for more than 6 months in another country which apparently means I cannot be a part of the apprenticeship scheme, unless I wait 3 years! This essentially means some people only have one route and it is too rigid. I have now in fact moved on to another related field which is not architecture because of this.

13. We believe that the best way to describe the competencies architects need may be to describe what an architect must KNOW, what they must be able to DO, and how they must BEHAVE. To what extent do you agree?
