14. What is your view or experience of professional practical experience for architects?
Question 1: What is your view or experience of professional practical experience for architects? Please provide as much detail where possible.
We are working with graduates and undergraduates in architecture and architectural technology. Our practice always has a desk for an interns all year around. Practical experience is essential and should be recognised for registration at every level. The focus on academic qualifications for registration is unfunded. Many individual who have spent 6 years or more in an architectural practice, have skills as valuable if not more valuable that those who have studied in university.
15. Have you experienced or witnessed any good examples of professional practical experience, from within the UK and abroad?
Question 2: Have you experienced or witnessed any good examples of professional practical experience, from within the UK and abroad?
Interns working with CK Architecture are paid by CK Architecture or receive a grant. Following their work experience with CK Architecture, they are generally in a position to find employment is other larger practices that do not have time to familiarise graduates with practical knowledge necessary in the working environment. Skill which are unfortunately not taught in schools.
16. Have you experienced or witnessed any examples of professional practical experience which you think could be improved?
Question 3: Have you experienced or witnessed any examples of professional practical experience which you think could be improved?
Improvements are always possible....
17. What changes to policy or practice would improve the quality and coherence of professional practical experience?
Question 4: What changes to policy or practice would improve the quality and coherence of professional practical experience?
If experience in a practice was recognised as a skill in itself for registration as an architect, many individuals would work at an earlier stage and schools would need to offer much more practical and competitive skills.
18. Do you have any further reflections or personal experiences about professional practical experience that you would like to share?
Question 5: Do you have any further reflections or personal experiences about professional practical experience that you would like to share?
Practical experience should be more valued by the ARB and other registration bodies. The lack of access to registration without listed university degrees is causing a form of academism and protectionism that is proven to be negative for the profession. The present registration systems for architects are lacking pluralism and coherence. Practical experience is not second to a university degree. Many qualified individuals from architectural technology, engineering and other sections of the AEC should be provided with easier access to ARB registration. Unfortunately even with decades of experience and master degrees, the ARB has closed the door. What is the rational behind this attitude?
